SDG developed a vision for the re-development of James Street from King Street to Church Street in a Civic Square Area to support the City’s goal of providing a community gathering place within the downtown core. The site is 1 hectare in St Catharines, Ontario. The project is intended to be an inclusive and dynamic outdoor pedestrian space that will serve the growing downtown community and could host a range of special events, festivals, markets and year-round activities. The project included numerous outdoor amenity areas such as a large splash pond proposed as a shallow water feature with jet fountains which doubles as a cooling splash zone in the summer and converts to a refrigerated skating rink in the winter. Rows of shade trees are to line the streets and provide shade to seated pedestrians. The space allowed for live shows and marketplace. The project role of SDG was a consultant to the Developer involved in erecting a condominium within the space.
