The Burlington Public Library (BPL) is an exciting space in downtown Burlington offering numerous opportunities for education, play, and inspiration.  In 2005, the Central Branch underwent a major renovation and expansion which included plans to redevelop the outdoor Reading Garden.  Unfortunately, the design at the time was not completed and the Reading Garden space became usable in its current state. In 2022, the BPL celebrated its 150th anniversary and the revitalized Reading Garden was planned to be part of the celebrations.  SDG donated design services and construction management for the project overseeing and coordinating project vendors, suppliers, and contractors. The BPL Central Branch Reading Garden supported the Burlington Public Library’s Strategic Plan (2021-2025) which includes the following goal: Inspire discovery with diverse collections, services, and spaces. This project supported that goal by transforming the Reading Garden space into a fully accessible, barrier-free outdoor environment that fosters a sense of place, inspiration, and inclusion.  From the onset, our team approached this project as a partnership with the BPL to define and develop a shared vision and create an inspiring space. Establishing a storyline of place, the context of a site is always our point of departure on a project, serving as inspiration and framing all our work.  The fully accessible courtyard space represents an opportunity to rethink the entire space into an environment for learning, curiosity, and discovery. New features include paved pedestrian seating area centered around an existing mature beech tree, bench seating, new colourful aluminum fencing, and plantings.  This new outdoor space becomes an extension of the inside allowing space for private/ public events, author readings, individual reading and reflection, as well as a space for children to play.
